Mark Sugarman

Mark founded MHS Capital to partner closely with ambitious, visionary entrepreneurs on a mission to build large, meaningful companies.

He first discovered his passion for entrepreneurship and technology while at Stanford, and after graduating in 1996, he joined Internet Capital Group as an unpaid intern with the dream of working with exceptional entrepreneurs and learning how great companies were built. After 6 months, ICG hired Mark as their first investment professional and he spent the next two years working with and investing in software and internet startups. In 1997, he made his first angel investment in VerticalNet, a company he later joined, helped take public and led their corporate development efforts as SVP of M&A and Partnerships.

After leaving VerticalNet, Mark continued his angel investing over the next 8-9 years and continued to build his investing track record, which includes two multi-billion dollar exits. He took the approach of investing in a few companies each year, often leading investments and serving on the Board. In 2006, he formalized this approach by founding MHS Capital with the personal and financial backing of an exceptional group of founders and operators from some of the largest, most successful tech companies of the last decade.

Mark is a native of San Francisco, and lives in the city with his wife, Chloe, and his newborn son, Archer. Outside of MHS Capital, Mark is a founding board member of the non-profit Nexleaf and an avid supporter of At The Crossroads.
